Giant HEART installation approved

One of Tradition’s proposed amenities will soon become a reality, while rising immediately to the rarified level of world-class status. “HEART in the Park” will be a stunning and iconic new community space centered around a gleaming, metallic art installation that will be the largest heart sculpture in the world.

As of June 13, 2022, the City Council and Public Art Advisory Board of Port St. Lucie have both unanimously approved Tradition’s public art proposal for the project. Port St. Lucie Mayor Shannon Martin stated that it will position the area as a “cultural destination” that strengthens community spirit.

The Heart and its accompanying visitor center will occupy a raised public plaza along Tradition Trail, at the intersection of Discovery Way and Village Parkway. The grounds will be aligned with the pedestrian walkway and promenade from the Shoppes at the Heart project. There will be vehicle, golf cart and bicycle parking in addition to public seating and gathering areas, making this prominent and memorable new landmark a natural focal point for public events.

The Heart itself will shine brilliantly, accenting its whimsically curved shape and reflecting the green grass and blue skies that surround it. Residents can enter the HEART via a doorway in its circular pedestal, climb upstairs and emerge high above ground on a glass bridge connecting both sides of the HEART’s pointed bottom.

This picturesque catwalk will become an ideal spot for photo opportunities, date nights or even marriage proposals. From this spot in Tradition, people will take photos that will be seen all around the world. That’s sharing the love!

The HEART is the brainchild and creation of JEFRË, a Filipino-American multimedia artist who is no stranger to evocative, large-scale works. His internationally-recognized art installations grace prominent public spaces around Orlando, Philadelphia, Manila and beyond and he was chosen for his ability to create memorable, relatable and inclusive experiences for people. JEFRË explained his vision behind the project, saying “this HEART will be a postcard moment that brings people together.”

First announced in 2021, this project has won the imaginations of everyone involved. Once constructed, it is sure to become a much-visited favorite of residents and visitors. Quite appropriately, the HEART and park are scheduled for public dedication Valentine’s Day 2024.

Home under construction in Port St. Lucie for Marine who lost both legs in Afghanistan

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — A retired Marine who bravely served our country is receiving a new home thanks to the Helping a Hero organization.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday morning for a custom-designed home for retired Marine Sgt. Christian Fleming and his family.

Fleming served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2000 to 2008.

His company served on Task Force Tarawa, the name given to the Second Marine Expeditionary Brigade during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

The unit was responsible for securing the city of An Nasiriya, also known as Ambush Alley.

While Fleming was working with the Department of Defense and training local Afghans, he lost both of his legs after an improvised explosive device detonated.

“We fought like dogs and took the city so the rest of the teams could roll north to take Baghdad,” Fleming said. “Most of us left as kids, but we all came back as men.”

Once it is complete, the wheelchair-accessible home will have four bedrooms and three baths for Fleming and his family.

“Daily life is just not going to be a task anymore. It’s not going to be a struggle. I can wake up and have a bad leg day and not have to put my prosthetics on. I can stay in the chair and be mobile in the house and be active,” Fleming said. “I can go outside with the guys. We can take the dog out. Everything’s going to be easier.”

U.S. Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., was among the officials who attended Monday morning’s ceremony.

Mast was serving in Afghanistan with the Army’s 28th Ordnance Company when he stepped on an IED and lost both of his legs in 2010.

‘Construction is booming’ and Mattamy Homes hiring in St. Lucie County

Florida Realtors reports home sales remain strong. Last month single-family home sales rose 23% compared to last year. In places like St. Lucie County, there’s limited inventory and a demand to built.

It’s a buyers market in southwest St. Lucie County and Mattamy Homes, the largest privately held homebuilder in North America, is on deadline building inventory.

“Construction is booming and we need people,” Steven Dassa, Mattamy Homes vice-president of operations, said. “And more so in Tradition in Port St. Lucie, the third fastest-growing community in the country.”

About 172 homes being are being built in the Manderlie community. A 55-and-older community is next, followed by eight others.

“Different ages from young to older communities,” Mattamy Homes warranty manager Brian Price said.

The company said it’s also seeing more customers from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties take advantage of upwards of 40% off housing costs, which equates to jobs from architecture to construction and accounting.

“We need trades people — plumbers, electricians, the roofer and concrete masons,” Dassa said. “And then we need the managers to take care of them and to schedule them and to get them paid properly on time.”

Dassa said as these properties expand, so will the positions.

“We’ll need construction managers, new home consultants and warranty technicians,” he said.

Mattamy Homes says they’ve secured building 10,000 homes in the St. Lucie County market alone. To learn more about job opportunities, click here.

New high school in Tradition moves closer to August classes as building walls rise on Feb. 16

The newest high school in St. Lucie County gets a big lift on Feb. 16 as the walls of its state-of-the art classrooms go up. Mattamy Homes and Charter Schools USA will celebrate the moment at 1 p.m. with a ceremony on-site at Tradition Preparatory High School.

“This is another step forward in Mattamy Homes’ vision for education at Tradition,” said Dan Grosswald, Mattamy President of Southeast Florida Division. “Students completing  lower grades will no longer have to leave their community for high school and they will receive superior education in the sciences.”

Mattamy Homes is underwriting part of the cost for the WISH program, which stands for Wellness, Innovation, Science and Health. As master developer of Tradition, the company is helping to create state-of-the-art labs,  supporting the school by designing its lobby and labs to give it a “Google HQ” look, and creating opportunities to connect the school with healthcare and innovative enterprises in the community.

“WISH will be at the center of our curriculum, which will include advanced placement courses and an international diploma, said principal Teresa Brown. “Our emphasis on preparation for higher education and our modern facilities will make our graduates more competitive college applicants and better prepared for rewarding careers.”

Tradition Preparatory High School will initially serve students in grade 9 and 10, adding a grade each year. Enrollment opened in December and will continue through the summer. Classes start in August. For more information, visit traditionprep.org.

The high school is part of the Charter Schools USA family of schools and is governed by Renaissance Charter School, Inc., which has been operating a network of the highest-performing charter schools in Florida for over a decade including the State of Florida’s first National Blue Ribbon Charter School. Renaissance Charter School at Tradition serves grades K-8.

For Valentine’s Day, Mattamy Homes unveils design for iconic ‘Heart’ sculpture at Tradition

Mattamy Homes has commissioned international artist JEFRË to design and construct a vibrant “heart” of Tradition, a meeting place  where people can hang out, interact, and spark new connections. The soaring, 100-foot heart-shaped sculpture will be the tallest of its kind in the world.

“Like the Bean in Chicago, the HEART will draw residents and visitors to an experience unlike any other,” said Dan Grosswald, Mattamy President of Southeast Florida Division. “People will revel in the sculpture’s sunlight brilliance and dramatic evening illumination.”

The sculpture, with its gentle twist, will rise above a circular pedestal measuring 30 feet in diameter, recalling St. Louis’s iconic Gateway Arch. The sun will create reflections on the HEART’s stainless steel, polished surface whose appearance will transform nightly with LED lights.

Those who climb the glass bridge connecting the two sides of the HEART will have far-reaching views in all directions. The landmark will be visible from Tradition’s main entrance near Interstate 95 , attracting visitors who want to share a moment at the sculpture with their friends online.

“Tradition is what is in your heart. I just want to show how big it can be,” said JEFRË, whose works include “Reflection” in Philadelphia and “Heaven’s Gate” in Manila.

The HEART is currently under construction at JEFRË’s studios in central Florida. Mattamy Homes will build the foundation at the intersection of Discovery Way and Village Parkway. Installation is expected to be completed in time for a public dedication on Valentine’s Day 2022.

First residents move into Manderlie, Mattamy Homes’ inaugural single-family community at Tradition

They knew Manderlie was home. Lauren Shade and Ryan Mitchell Wasso had looked at many communities, but when they came to Mattamy Homes’ first development at Tradition, they found what they wanted in the single-family Aspen floorplan.

“We appreciate the unique architectural design compared to other homes in this area,” Shade and Wasso say. “The gas appliance package, impact windows and covered lanai were also deciding factors. No other community has better standard options.”

The couple will gain hundreds of neighbors in coming months, as Mattamy Homes constructs 173 single-family homes based on 10 floorplan designs. The Aspen Contemporary has two bedrooms and two baths, with a two-car garage and flex space for a work-at-home professional or another bedroom. The owner’s suite features a large walk-in closet and a spacious covered lanai for relaxation or private entertainment.

“Being the first buyers to move in was really special to us,” say Shade and Wasso. “We were the first to tour the homes as well, so we were super-excited to also be the first to move in. We appreciate how supportive the Mattamy Homes team has been and can’t wait for the memories to come.”

Manderlie offers 10 home designs ranging from the Lilac at 1,330 sq. ft. to the Rowan at 3,200 sq. ft.. Floor plans range from 2 to 6 bedrooms and 2 to 4 baths. Plenty of homes are being fast-tracked for quick move-in.  Prices start in the $200s.

Mattamy employs certified architects to design homes to meet modern lifestyles and make best use of all space. As the master developer of Tradition, the company connects residents to their greater community. For Manderlie homeowners that means being at the head of the Tradition Trail, or T Trail. The mobility network, the first of its kind in South Florida within a planned development, provides experiential trailheads for bicyclists, pedestrians and riders in electric vehicles to enjoy. For a limited time, Mattamy is offering a complimentary e-bike to those who purchase a home at Manderlie so that every resident can enjoy the T Trail.

“At Manderlie, we are committed to innovation that gives our homeowners a higher quality of life,” said Dan Grosswald, Mattamy President of Southeast Florida Division. “We will do the same with Telaro, an active adult, 55-plus community with 400-plus homesites and resort-style amenities, which is ready to break ground.”

Manderlie is located at 11972 SW Lyra Drive in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The sales office is open Sundays from noon to 6 p.m., Wednesdays from 1-6 p.m. and all other days from 10-6 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 772-2017-0057. With shuttle debut, Mattamy Homes and Beep unveil future of transportation in Tradition

Mattamy Homes, the largest privately owned homebuilder in North America, and Beep, a Florida-based autonomous Mobility-as-a-Service provider, bring the shuttle service in Southeast Florida to Tradition. The service is part of the Tradition Trail, also known as T Trail, a larger mobility network serving the community, and is the first of its kind in South Florida within a planned development.

Mattamy Homes plans to introduce a multi-functional mobility network spanning almost 20 miles with experiential trailheads along the way. Beginning at Manderlie, Mattamy’s first development in the area, the trail will include stops at the Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital, Tradition Town Square and the future site of Veterans Memorial Park. Additionally, the trail will connect regional parks, athletic fields and nature trails throughout the community.

“We are committed to making Tradition the destination for people seeking a higher quality of life,” said Dan Grosswald, Mattamy President of Southeast Florida Division. “Our partnership with Beep is just the first step by providing residents greater freedom to travel how, where and when they want.”

Beep’s 9-seat electric vehicles will be a feature on the trail’s initial loop with a dedicated lane beginning at Manderlie, taking passengers to Tradition Town Square and The Landing Shopping Center. An onboard specialist and Beep’s Global Command Center in Orlando will monitor the shuttle, which has a maximum speed of 15 mph and is equipped with onboard sensors and GPS tracking.

“Mattamy’s vision, with the backing of the city of Port St. Lucie, will create an alternative to cars that will make the most traveled roads and community safer, eco-friendly and more enjoyable for everyone,” said Joe Moye, Beep CEO. “Residents will have greater access to safe, reliable, high-quality transportation.”

As the Tradition community grows, Mattamy plans to add miles of experiential trailheads for shuttle riders, bicyclists and pedestrians to enjoy. Next year, the company will introduce electric bicycles from Elby Mobility, a leading provider of e-bike fleets to residential communities, college campuses, and corporate and hospitality properties.

The partnership between Mattamy and Beep stemmed from the successful introduction of the first autonomous vehicles as part of Central Florida’s Lake Nona community in September 2019. The service has safely transported over 16,000 passengers in the first year of operation. In May, the company will launch a similar service at Yellowstone National Park with the National Park Service.

Passengers in Tradition can expect the best practices for ridesharing and transit according to federal guidelines such as frequent cleaning procedures, modified and reduced seating capacity, onboard hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. Shuttle service and routes will be operationally ready for passenger service by the end of 2020.

In 2018, Mattamy purchased 2,780 acres at Tradition with plans for 8,500 single-family homes and 150 acres of commercial property. Construction has commenced in Manderlie, its first community of single-family home as well as Telaro, an active adult 55+ community with resort-style amenities boasting 400-plus homesites.
