September 12 was a proud and meaningful day at Tradition as we gathered with Helping a Hero and the community to officially welcome Corporal Sue Crutchfield, a veteran and double amputee, and her family to their new home in the Kenley neighborhood.

The morning began with a heartfelt ceremony at the homesite. Neighbors, city leaders and partners gathered to celebrate the milestone and present CPL. Crutchfield with the keys to her new home. The specially adapted design includes wider doorways, a roll-in shower and an open layout to provide the accessibility and comfort following the life-changing injuries she sustained during her 2006 deployment to Afghanistan.

“It has been an incredible journey to watch this home come to life,” said Dan Grosswald, Southeast Florida division president for Mattamy Homes. “We are honored to welcome Corporal Crutchfield and her family to Tradition, and we know the residents of Kenley will embrace them with open arms.”

The home’s completion followed the groundbreaking held in May, when the community first gathered to show support for CPL. Crutchfield. From that day forward, dozens of trade partners and volunteers worked side by side to make the vision a reality. For everyone involved, seeing the Crutchfield family step through the front door was a moment of pride and joy.

CPL. Crutchfield’s journey is one of resilience, sacrifice and hope. In November 2006, her unit’s Humvee was struck by multiple landmines and enemy fire, killing fellow soldiers and leaving her with catastrophic injuries, including the loss of both legs below the knee and a traumatic brain injury.

Her recovery was long and difficult, requiring dozens of surgeries and years of rehabilitation. She re-learned how to walk, talk and care for herself while raising her children, and has since gone on to inspire others as a mother, wife and decorated veteran. Her military honors include a Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts and numerous other commendations.

For Tradition, this key handover was more than the completion of a home. It was a reminder of what community means — neighbors gathering to honor sacrifice, celebrate resilience and extend a warm welcome to a family beginning a new chapter.
